Choosing the Right Needle Valve for Your Application

They are often used for the precise regulation of relatively low flow. They are small in size to ensure finest flow control.Needle valves are used to control flow into delicate gauges, which might be damaged by the sudden flow of fluid underpressure. They are also used in machines where it is desirable formotion to be brought slowly to a halt. Also, it is used in places where constant, calibrated, low flow rate must be maintained for some time, such as the idle fuel flow in a carburetor. When choosing needle-valves, consider the following important factors.

1.Type of Fuel

Before you make a selection of the valve, consider the type of fluid the system will carry. Is thefluid viscous or thin? Gas or liquid? Since needle valves are small and have very thin space for the flow of fuel, they should be avoided if the fuel is viscous as it can choke the valve ,and as a result can damage it.

2.Pressure of the System

Pressure of the system is the key component when it comes to valve. Valves are made for certain pressure ratings and if they are made to work beyond that, they can cause disaster. There are needle valves ranging from 5000 to 16000 psi. The selection will depend on usage. For example, Low-pressure needle valves are used in Hydraulic Systems and can handle pressures of 5000 and 6000 psi at temperatures of 100°F. Higher pressure valves are also available that can handle up to 10,000 psi at the same temperature. Very high pressure needle valves can be designed for 16000 psi.

3.Temperature

Like other industrial components, needle valves function in a variety of environments. There can be extreme conditions. Temperatures can be too high or low. Therefore, when you are making a selection of the needle valve you should consider the temperatures at which the valve will be working. The packing used in needle valves can help to find out the range of temperatures it can endure. Two most common materials used in increasing a valve's temperature range are PTFE and PEEK. Needle valves are available for as low as -65°F to a high temperature resistance of 850°F.

4.Material

Since the valve has to bear the harsh conditions and has to work at extreme temperatures, it is very important that you consider the material used in making it. For example, the varying expansion rates of the component can result in leakage. Also, you need to consider other conditions like corrosive activities. In case, the valve is to be used in chemical flows it needs to be made from corrosive free material. Therefore, steel is widely used to make needle values.

Brass is another metal which finds its way in hydraulic systems, high temperature systems and gas sampling.Alloy 400 is used in oxygen service, research laboratories, and panel board instrumentation, among many others.

5.Size

Needles valves are available in different shapes and sizes. Needle valves are commonly available in metric sizes ranging from 2 to 11 mm and standard sizes of 1/8" to 1".Choosing the most appropriate size will ensure smooth flow and efficient system operation and will decrease the chances of leaks.
